TikTok Content Creators Fueling Unofficial Trade for Unlicensed Weight-Loss Drug
An underground market for unlicensed weight-loss drugs is propelled by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on messaging platforms, according to new investigations.
Investigational Drug Gaining Traction Via Social Media
The experimental drug, which is still in clinical trials, is being advertised by online personalities for its alleged fat-burning properties. Followers are urged to message these accounts directly for supplier links, while also obtaining promotional offers.
Active Trade on Messaging Platforms
Separately, a flourishing trade exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of members share “before and after” images, administration instructions and claims of rapid UK delivery. Sellers promote the substance there before directing buyers to other platforms for purchases.
Understanding The Experimental Drug
Retatrutide is an experimental injectable developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug targets three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Early trials indicate it could help individuals lose up to 25% of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed digitally as the next Ozempic.
Medical Professionals Express Worries
However, physicians and chemists have warned that the sale of what remains an unapproved drug in the UK is worrisome and could lead to users injecting substances of uncertain source.
Some professionals said the demand for retatrutide could be linked to the increasing cost of licensed slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Position and Implementation
Marketing the unapproved drug on social media or messaging apps is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed drug that must not be marketed or distributed for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Some content creators attempt to sidestep the rules by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted drug, but promotion and distribution can still breach pharmaceutical, advertising, and consumer laws, risking penalties, prosecution or prison.
Platform Response and Content Elimination
According to TikTok, the platform has removed problematic material and banned associated keywords and search suggestions. The company said it was dedicated to maintaining the platform safe and allocating resources in strengthening enforcement strategies.
Online Marketplace Operations
Research also found communities with up to 9,000 participants selling the experimental drug using the platform's integrated search feature, which functions like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” immediately brings up groups with numerous of users, populated with photos of slimming results, positive reviews and detailed instructions for preparing or administering at home.
After moments of joining one community, a seller posted WhatsApp details, where the majority of transactions take place. The seller provided an guidebook and guaranteed delivery within two days. When asked whether the product was authentic, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a supposed laboratory certificate. None inquired about weight, medical conditions or previous experience.
Product Information and Costs
Inside these communities, messages show black plastic packages with Royal Mail stickers, claiming to include fresh supplies. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can select between powder vials, mixed at residence with purified liquid, or ready-to-use injectors usually priced at £160 for 20 milligrams. When questioned how long a pen should be used, sellers give conflicting responses ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Platform Oversight and Safety Measures
A spokesperson for Telegram said it regularly monitored dangerous content on its platform including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Professional Warnings
“People are administering materials they cannot confirm. Although the research behind retatrutide is valid, these digital products may not contain what they advertise,” said a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmaceutical services at a pharmacy service.
A medical professional of an online medical service connected the increase in interest to current cost increases for approved weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, patients are turning to online platforms. But counterfeit injections are highly dangerous. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the conditions they were made in was sterile,” she explained.
Her team has already encountered individuals injured by personal administration from unverified suppliers. “We understand the frustration, but purchasing from Telegram or communication platforms is taking chances with your well-being,” said Wyllie. “These substances could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”
Producer Statement
A representative from the pharmaceutical company said the substance was in third stage research studies and had not been evaluated or approved by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this point no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, noting that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly investigational product not yet authorized … may expose users to possibly significant medical dangers”.
